• Could you give up that Sunday morning bacon butty, or Friday night four cheese pizza? If so, have you ever considered becoming a vegan? I have been a vegetarian or pescaterian for most of my adult life. Last year my brother became a vegan. I have been considering it for a while, so we sat down and discussed some of the pros and cons of veganism.

First off, what does being vegan even mean?

Vegans, like vegetarians don't eat animals or fish. However, vegans also don't consume any animal products, so for example milk, eggs, cheese, etc. They will generally not wear animal products either, so leather, suede, etc. is a no no.

    Pros:

    • A healthier lifestyle? Eating plant based foods is generally thought to be very healthy diet, unless all you do is cut out meat and diary and eat chips all day, in which case you won't be getting the right levels of nutrients your body needs, especially protein and vitamin B12.

    • Creative eating: You now have try different things to replace your "comforts". That routine of going to the shop for paper and milk, well now you can now have fun finding alternatives. Baking will become your new friend as you experiment creating vegan alternatives to your old favourites.

    • Cost: A weekly shop of pulses, lentils, fruit and veg and tofu, will cost you a great deal less. Also, vegan Quorn is become much more widely available, so you can still create a simple easy spaghetti bolognese at home.

    • Animal welfare: Undeniably, for many vegans this is a huge motivation towards choosing this lifestyle.

    Cons:

    • You don't have to be vegan to have a healthy plant-based diet: There is no reason why you can't then combine this with a non-vegan diet.

    • Difficulty dining out: It can be harder to find options on the menu. This is one of the reasons I became pescaterian; there was only so much mushroom risotto I could handle.

    • It can be a radical change: You have to be careful you are getting all you need from your diet.

    • Why do you want to be vegan? The reason for your choice will determine whether this is the right choice for you.

Are you a vegan? Have you ever wanted to a vegan? What was your experience?

    Lots of love,
    Helen xoxo
